In 1900 a boarder living on the Hancock property by the name of William H Stafford, a Confederate Veteran of the Civil War was arrested for murder and what can only be described as the trial of the century in this area took place the following year... Stafford was alleged to have killed a man by the name of B F Daniels...
Daniel's was robbed by William's Son, James Stafford who then fled to key West... He was soon captured and about to be tried for the robbery and grand larceny when his Father William allegedly ambushes and fatally shoots Mr. Daniels who is the prosecutors star witness.... The articles about the trial are massive and difficult to transcribe in the comments section so I will share a few snippets below... Stafford was ultimately acquitted of the murder and his defense attorney raised doubt of his guilt by insinuating that this evenings honoree Richard Beauregard may have been the actual killer !! ( He was not )
